Obscene is a good adjective although I can think of many more to describe people who accumulate so much wealth while hundreds of thousands of their fellow human beings starve to death each day. Imagine thinking about that. But do they? Three and a half billion people vs 85. The inhumanity of it all.
The report, titled “Working for the Few,” was released Monday, and was compiled by Oxfam – an international organization looking for solutions against poverty and injustice. A total of 210 people became billionaires last year, joining the existing 1,426 billionaires with a combined net worth of $5.4 trillion.
Five trillion dollars. That’s 5 with 12 zeroes. What the hell can these people possibly do with their billions of dollars? Can you spend it all? What would you spend it on? How many chalets? How many cars? How much jewelery?
What’s the point of it all? We all end up in the ground after x-years.
A survey in six countries (the US, UK, Spain, Brazil, India and South Africa) showed that a majority of people believe that laws are skewed in favor of the rich,” the report said.
Really? We Americans believe that? Do we? Well, we who attend to this blog know, but what about them? Do the know but don’t figure that there is much they can do about it? Do they get their daily dose of right-wing media medications which block their logical reasoning center in the brain?
Why is the highest tax bracket only in the low 30’s? How did it get that low? Who voted for the representatives who did that? Did they know that their reps would vote in favor of the rich? Was the propaganda too strong?
Now, decades later, the chickens are coming home to roost. Unemployment, recession, tight money, stagnant wages, union-busting, lower standard of living. Who knew? Who could have predicted this?
EVERYBODY should have.
Ignorance and propaganda.
