Yes they do! And it is a cover for their racism and/or their virulent hate for the President. James M. Perry, retired chief political correspondent of the Wall Street Journal, penned an article in our local newspaper titled, Americans continue to believe in nonsense. Many of the people with whom I work on the Obama campaign often tell me how angry they are at the ‘stupid’ things they hear from the people on the other end of the phone or at the doors. “How dumb can they be?”they say to me. Well, they aren’t dumb or stupid but rather angry. Angry that a black family lives in the White House. You know, those people ought to be in the basement doing the laundry.
A USA Today/ Gallup survey shows that 25 percent of adult Americans continue to believe Mr. Obama was born somewhere outside the United States. Among Republicans, the figure is much higher. They believe that, against a storm of evidence showing that Mr. Obama was born in Honolulu, because they want to believe that the man who occupies the White House is there illegitimately.
Indeed. These ‘believers’ who typically operate in an alternate universe, use that concept to shield their deep-seated bigotry. I sat in a van [presidential motorcade] with a black policeman for quite a few hours yesterday and he brought up the ‘elephant in the room’ concept: it’s all about race. Naturally, he was preaching to the choir, but it was refreshing to hear it from a black man, especially a professional police officer.
They truly are angry. Upset. Frustrated. They couldn’t believe what happened in 2008 and have never forgotten that a young, ‘uppity’ Negro with a foreign name beat an old, white, military hero. Thus the de-legitimization of the President- the can’t be a valid president. He couldn’t be! Thus, they are like dry sponges eager to absorb any nonsense that right-wing media projects at them. The simpletons.
Perry also quotes a Pew Research Group poll which shows that 18 percent of adult Americans believe President Obama is a Muslim. Among Republicans, the number is 30 percent. Thirty percent! He’s not one of us- we the true Americans.
Yet, the readers of this blog already know all of this. So why am I repeating it once again? Well, sometimes a little review helps before the final exam.
Recall the townhall meeting in 2008 when Senator McCain was confronted by an older woman who called Sen. Obama a Muslim? If you’d like to read about what happened after that confrontation, here’s a link to an interview with her. She is the poster child of the hate-Obama fringe.
Most sadly, they vote.
