John Scopes is indicted for teaching Darwinian theory in school

As the political scene is quite boring at this time, I dove into ‘this day in history’ and found that in 1925 John Scopes was indicted for teaching Darwinian theory in school. That’s just 87 years ago. I have two living cousins who were 7 and 5 at the time. Imagine that! And the religious idiocy continues unabated in much of this nation- the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.

Will future generations look back on the religious idiocy of 2012 the same way that most of us look back on the Scopes Trial? I say most of us because there are millions of Americans alive today whose whose ‘belief system’ is unaltered from that day in 87 years ago. Recall the recent op-ed in my local newspaper last week by a fundamentalist preacher who began, ‘Some 6000 years ago God created marriage.’

In fact, Clarence Darrow, defense attorney for Scopes, called out this same religious idiocy during the trial: “You insult every man of science and learning in the world because he does not believe in your fool religion.” In an odd courtroom move, Darrow placed the state’s attorney, William Jennings Bryan, on the stand. He asked Bryan,’If God created Eve from the rib of Adam, where did Cain get his wife?’   Darrow used these examples to suggest that the stories of the Bible could not be scientific and should not be used in teaching science.  Bryan retorted that the purpose of this type of questioning was ‘to cast ridicule on everybody who believes in the Bible.’   To that Darrow charged,  “We have the purpose of preventing bigots and ignoramuses from controlling the education of the United States.”

He said that 87 years ago, but sadly, those bigots and ignoramuses are still controlling the education of the United States. They are everywhere today- on school boards, state legislatures and in the halls of Congress. Some even ran for president. Note the Santorum Amendment in the United States Senate in 2001 which promoted the teaching of intelligent design while questioning the academic standing of evolution in U.S. public schools. In August 2011, the Louisiana Science Education Act was passed into law. The legislation is to ‘assist teachers, principals, and other school administrators to create and foster an environment within public elementary and secondary schools that promotes critical thinking skills.’ Imagine that! Mixing critical thinking with ‘fool religion.’ Nine other state legislatures have adopted similar legislation although none have yet passed into law.

Six-day creation, Adam, Eve, apple, ribs and a snake in dialogue in a garden. And millions of Americans want this stuff to be taught in science classrooms in the year 2012. We haven’t moved forward very far 87 years later…

  1. You remind me of the wonderful Spencer Tracy Frederick March movie of events. The crowd of fundies were singing the straight version of Give Me that Old Time Religion….

And now I can’t get ‘Gimme that old time religion’ music out of my head (alternative lyrics of course, like “I will worship Aphrodite, I will worship Aphrodite, She wears a see-through nightie, and that’s good enough for me…) I tink it will be necessary to move on after that to a rousing round or two of the alternate lyrics to Scotland the Brave, involving irreverent sex acts with oatmeal and ….just AND……I do hope our dear friend Laci will forgive me. I will leave it to each of you to decide if you fancy lookng up filk song Scotland the Brave….
    OR………..write your own
Hooray for the late Minnesota Sci Fi author, Gordie Dickson, credited for starting this one, and the filk singing of wacky science fiction conventions where people have too much fun and too little sleep, making up alternate lyrics to the ‘classics’.

    OLD TIME RELIGION—–a filk song

REFRAIN after each verse (if you can stand it!)

    There are people into voodoo
    there are people into voodoo
I know, I know, I hope that you do,
    it’s good enough for me.

There will be a lot of lovin’
When we’re gathered in our coven
With your pushin’ and your shovin’,
so there’ll be room enough for me.

We shall worship with the Druids
    Drinking strange fermented fluids
and that’s good enough for me.

There’s an opera written for us
We all join in the chorus
    It’s an opera ’bout Boris,
    and it’s…..

    With your trusty old Althame
You can blast a double whammy
Or slice and dice a whammy
    which is …..

Well, she raised an awful flurry
When she made the scholars worry.
Thank the gods for Margaret Murray!!!
    It’s good……

    Let us go and worship Hermes;
Got a staff that crawls with wormies
That could knock out all the germies,
    He’s good…..
Well, there’s one thing that I do know,
(insert someone’s name) favorite is Juno,
‘Cause she’s awfully good at…you know,
    And that’s ……

It was good enough for Sapho
With her lady on her lap-oh
She put Lesbos on the map-oh
    with her pagan poetry

    Meeting at the witching hour
By the bud and branch and flower
Folks are raising up the power
That’s where I want to be.

Let us gather in our saunas
When The Spirit comes upon us
To perform the rites of faunas,
    That’s good enough…..

We went off to worship Venus.
And by gosh you should have seen us!
Now the clinic has to screen us.
But, she’s good enough for me.

    We will pray to Aphrodite
    Even tho’ she’s rather flighty
And they say she wears no nightie,
    And that’s good …..

We will pray with those Egyptians
Build our pyramids to put our crypts in
    Cover subways with inscriptions,
    And that’s ……

Oh, Old Odin we will follow
And in fighting we will wallow
“Til we wind up in Valhallooooo,
    And that’s good enough…..

Let me follow dear old Buddha
    For there is nobody cuter
He comes in plastic, wood or pewter,
    And that’s……

    We will pray with Zarathrustra
    Pray just like we usta
    I’m a Zarathrustra booster…..
    And that’s good …..

Hare Krishna gets a laugh on
When he sees me dressed in Saffron
With my hair that’s only half-on,
    Oh, he’s good…..

I’ll rise early in the morning
When the sun gives me a warning
That the solar age is dawning,…
    Well, that’s good.

  2. Hello Muddy,
I have to agree with you too as you know is a subject very close with me. Here we are in 2012 and still having to fight this stupidity to keep our children up to date in science verses “The World Is Flat” Fundies.

We have much more serious problems to deal with instead of this ignorance.

    1. The fundies will patently condemn any actions that go against their ‘beliefs’ and also condemn those who attempt to prove them wrong. They HAVE to otherwise their entire house of cards collapses and their ‘gateway’ to heaven closes on them. At that point, their lives would be worthless [of course, to us they already are!].
