At Last: Obama Cuts Pentagon

The golden goose has at last been de-feathered. Even though it has been 53 years since Dwight Eisenhower warned of a bloated, out-of-control military-industrial complex, President Obama took him up on his warning. No doubt, this will cause much buzz over there on the right-edge of the universe, but then, they’ve enjoyed five decades of GI Joe running wild. War, war, war!

Perhaps if we didn’t have such a bloated military, a president might be more cautious is choosing when to deploy American troops abroad. Perhaps. It will be an interesting historical note that GW Bush’s pre-emptive invasion of Iraq may have been the last ‘war’ which the United States fought. Unless we get a candidate that sings, “Bomb, bomb, bomb-bomb Iran.”

Some pundit quipped yesterday that our debt and deficit may be more of a ‘national threat’ than any foreign entity could pose. Imagine how much better we could take care of The People of our nation when we close the drain pipe from the Treasury to the Pentagon. Where have all of those hundreds of billions of dollars that flowed to the Pentagon gone? How have they, in the past decade, helped The People of this nation lead better, healthier lives? Or, for that matter, safer lives? Who among us actually ‘believed’ back in 2003 that the United States of America could be attacked by a two-bit dictator like Saddam Hussein? Who believed back in 2001 that a decade of war in Afghanistan would shield the United States from further terrorist acts?

How many hundreds of billions of dollars? How many lives? How many prosthetics? How much PTSD? How many ruined families?

The era of the warmongers may, hopefully, be coming to an end. At long last!

  1. I think I’m really proud of our President today. The “new” military will be using that latest technology (and cheaper) to defend American more than we have ever been protected before. The need for massive troops has been obsolete for decades. Now if he could only grow a set to deal with that tiny Country in the Middle East who starts fights that we are expected to finish.

  2. Hello Muddy,
Just as Daddy Bush had to “Right Size” the military in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s (also NSA, CIA) to help balance the bloated budget and massive debt….and “Forget Reading My Lips” to raise taxes as the other means to balance the massive debt budget; so has the more sane minds of this administration recognized the need to repeat the same actions that correct the budget aspects then. KUDOs to President Obama!!

To answer your question, “How many hundreds of billions of dollars? How many lives? How many prosthetics? How much PTSD? How many ruined families?” The answer is Too Many, Too Many, Too Many, Too Many, and last but not least, TOO MANY!!

All he is doing, my friend, is shifting the emphasis to the Pacific. On a recent trip to Australia and New Zeland, Obama announced a statregic shift by placing troops on a base there. It is the Pentagon that is hyping the “aggressive nature” of China. I believe China has one air-craft carrier, and
their military budget is but a fraction of ours it seems. If we move into
Southeast Asia is any difference than putting bases in Saudia Arabia and the EMR. What was the result of that? Yep, bin Laden and Ground Zero and two
wars. I am sure the Chinese looked upon this increasing military presence
    of the U.S. as a “friendly” act……..
