The year ends tonight, thankfully. Yet sadly, there’s an entire year of presidential politics ahead in 2012. Sigh! Should we be paying that much homage to the election of our president as to spend 6 months the year before and 11 more during the year of the election? Seventeen months? Gasp!
It was an entertaining 6 months, though. The GOP primary battles provided a new genre of television viewing: sit-com as reality TV. Unfortunately for many members of the once-Grand Old Party, they did not view it as sit-com at all. To them, it was the real deal. Seriously? Raise your hand if, at the outset, you saw the GOP debates as a circus act. The clown car.
I think back on Michelle Bachmann’s infamous line that he hoped to ‘make Barack Obama a one-term president. Yesterday a dozen Iowans showed up at one of her rallies. She’s gone. As was The Donald and his birther nonsense. Herman Cain and his women trumping the 9-9-9 idiocy. Rick Perry couldn’t count to three. Newt attempting to portray himself as something other than the bitter losing Speaker of the House of yesteryear. Yeesh!
Of course, each of these contenders rose like a rocket in popularity with the right-wing base of the GOP in hopes that he or she would put that uppity Obama in his place. As their rocket ran out of fuel, they fell like a dead duck. Yet, there was another waiting for his turn on the rocket ship. Up, down, up, down. They don’t call them the reactionary right for nothing. Pitiful inattention to substance. Just think of the comparison of each of these failures to President Obama There is no comparison, but in the minds of the reactionary far-right, they grabbed for anybody they could, regardless of intelligence, wisdom and thoughtfulness.
On Tuesday there will be little relief in this non-stop spectacle of idiocy. Perhaps there will be one less clown in the car, but still there will be enough left to continue on with the Shakespearean tragedy. One by one they will fall, yet this will go on until July when it all ends at the GOP convention. Does America have enough patients for all of this? I seriously doubt it. I for one will not.
Happy New Year!
