There is nothing more steadfast, true and resolute in the political world than being classified as a LIBERAL. If I may butcher a metaphor and a soppy film line, “Being a Liberal means never having to say you’re sorry.” True, that. Few liberals these days are going before the cameras to express their ‘deep regrets’ over what they said. It seems quite clear that those who hang on the far-right end of the political spectrum are often forced to retract their statements and/or apologize for a stupid action.
I seldom need to apologize for any political position that I have held; there is no need to. Here in America, especially, that sense of liberty written into both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution shout both liberty and liberalism as does Lady Liberty standing majestically in the New York harbor.
Life on the left-side of the political spectrum is bright, breezy and, well, liberating- like the weather after the storm has passed. So too our political philosophy. The word ‘limits’ does not often pop up in our discourse. Our eyes are not myopic and neither is our vision. We like to look out of a wide-open door rather than into a dark tunnel. We are welcoming and wish to open doors rather than close them. We tend to have great empathy for others, especially the downtrodden, marginalized and repressed.
We further believe that a government of the people is instituted to serve the people. We put much faith and hope in our government to right wrongs, to protect the defenseless and to help guarantee the general Welfare of its citizens.
Conservatives and those jackasses posing as conservatives, especially, are limiters. They cannot tolerate a free and open society and a government that plays a role in the general Welfare of its citizens. They often believe that boundaries need to be drawn, moderations imposed, restrictions must be issued. I wonder what they fear? Fear has to be a large motivating force in their psyche. I ask once again, what are they afraid of?
The underlying message sent 24/7 by the right-wing media is fear- especially fear of ‘the other.’ Those who sop it up must have an abnormal, virulent fear gene that we liberals have not inherited. The only thing that we fear, I might say, is fear itself.
Enough. The sun shines brightly today, the storm has passed and the opportunities for adventure are endless.
